WEEKEND COURSES: These courses are conveniently aimed at the busy professional. They are set design projects that run mainly on Saturdays and some Sundays. See our 2010 calendar for dates.

BENCH SPACE SESSIONS: Our week-day, bench space sessions run on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. A highly qualified instructor is available exclusively for no more than 4 participants per session, to help guide participants in all facets of their projects from concept through to creation.

ONE-ON-ONE MENTORING: This is the most direct and efficient way to acquire the necessary design and construction skills to produce exceptional, gallery standard, work. Working exclusively alongside an expert, the participant directs the nature of activities.

SPECIAL WEEK-DAY COURSES: These week-day courses are designed to train those who wish to participate in our mid-week Bench Space Sessions, and for those who have home workshops. See our 2010 calendar for dates.

The Erasmus School of Creative Arts (ESCA) was established in January 2010, completing four years of planning and building. It is a spacious, superbly equipped teaching studio owned and operated by Neil and Pam Erasmus.

ESCA conducts set-design and self-directed courses in fine woodwork. Additionally, they offer one-on-one mentoring and bench space to those wishing to work on their own projects in a pleasant environment where they can be assisted through aesthetic and technical problems.

In the not-too-distant future, ESCA will expand its activities into other creative areas such as jewellery making, steam bending, French polishing and drawing.

Neil and Pam Erasmus
Neil and Pam Erasmus For over thirty years, Neil and Pam Erasmus have been designing, making, teaching and writing about Fine Furniture. Erasmus designs grace the homes and public spaces of discerning collectors across Australia and the world. Neil is a regular, contributing editor for the Australian Wood Review magazine, and was senior lecturer at the Australian School of Fine Wood. He also teaches at the prestigious, Center for Furniture Craftsmanship in the USA. Neil and Pam have won numerous awards for their contemporary designs, the most recent being Studio Furniture 2010. Both Neil and Pam’s works are featured in various publications, such as the ‘500’ series of books.

The Art of Fine Furniture – Introduction - ESCA course

This introductory course is the first in a series of one term courses. In this first course the participants will learn, amongst other subjects, the safe use and maintenance of hand tools, wood technology and drawing. For a full list of subjects covered, please contact Neil or Pam. For the first time, ESCA is about to embark into the serious business of taking keen, aspiring studio-furniture makers through the rigours of acquiring the necessary hand and machine skills while mentoring them towards developing an individual, ‘signature’ design aesthetic. This series of courses is aimed at the individual who wishes to learn everything about The Art of Fine Furniture, but who can’t afford to take an extended period of time off work. Typically, the series covers a similar, if not far less formal, curriculum to nationally accredited diploma or associate degree courses, albeit over a longer period of time. Each series will run for 9 consecutive Saturdays during school terms. At this stage it is envisaged that ESCA will run at least 8 courses in the series with, perhaps, if the interest is there an extra 2 or 3 advanced courses. We will only run 3 courses in 2012 as we will be spending the last term in the USA teaching.
